Sony PSP & project-based learning
Date: 13/05/2008

Liverpool Direct Limited is to offer project-based learning services to schools using the latest Sony PSP technologies as part of a deal struck between BT and Sony.
This innovative learning initiative is part of programme set up by BT who recently entered into a four year agreement with Sony to deliver solutions to schools.
What is a PSP?
The PlayStation Portable is a smaller, lighter version of Sony's PlayStation, which has a built-in screen and speakers so that you don't have to plug it in to anything to use it.
The PSP is much more than a games machine. It can display audio, video and still-image content. It comes equipped with Wi-Fi technology to enable connectivity to other PSPs and internet browsing. It also offers an add-on camera and a GPS device to expand its capabilities even further.
How can it be used in school?
The PSP can be used for a range of activities:
- Podcasting – to create audio and video files to send and receive via podcasts.
- Multi media authoring – using software authoring tools a teacher can capture, upload and broadcast a lesson to students on their PSPs. Equally students can create their own video and audio content and publish themselves back to other students and teachers. All of this can be stored and accessed through a designated Learning Platform.
- Video conferencing – from PSP to PSP and other devices.
- PSP is custom made for the student market. Over 2m 8 – 25 year olds in the UK have these units (26m worldwide). Unlike a PDA, PSP is a stable and sustainable technology platform that students identify with easily.
- The increasing use of self authoring multimedia tools and sites like MYSPACE, BEBO and UTUBE validate PSP’s relevance and fit to the student market.
- PSP is now an accredited handheld device in BSF programmes. Local Authorities and CLCs across the country are actively working on mobilisation programmes.
Curriculum focused
Whether it is a French language learning exercise, or a project-based lesson themed on Henry V, students and teachers can use this innovative technological platform to capture content, place it online and enhance teaching provision.
